Makaton Participant Manuals Now Available in Digital Format
When I was informed about The Makaton Charity’s introduction of digital learning materials, I initially approached the change with caution. I decided to observe the implementation and allow others to adopt the new learning method first, while transitioning at a pace that suited me. Although I mentioned digital options to new participants, I did not actively promote or strongly advocate for their immediate adoption.
Here is one account from my professional experience:
I regularly collaborate with a national charity, which provides me each month with a comprehensive list of participant names and addresses for forthcoming workshops. The charity demonstrates excellent organisational skills, consistently ensuring this information arrives well in advance, allowing adequate time to distribute workshop materials prior to training commencement. Although the process is largely efficient, certain challenges may occasionally occur. For example, participants might relocate without timely updates to their contact details, requiring manuals to be sent either to work or home addresses based on individual needs. Errors may also arise from misreading or incorrectly recording information, particularly postcodes. Additionally, some individuals opt not to disclose personal details, and last-minute changes can hinder materials from reaching participants promptly. Moreover, late workshop bookings can impede the advance distribution of necessary resources.
The charity I support strongly advocated for the provision of electronic manuals to all participants, recognising the immediate advantages such resources offer.
After conducting just a few workshops, I quickly saw the benefits of this innovative learning method. I am now convinced that Digital Learning Kits offer improved accessibility and inclusivity to suit individual needs. With their portability, learners can use them on mobile devices, and they feature regularly updated instructional videos. They also help protect the environment by cutting down on the use of printed materials over time. Tutors can order them as needed, so there are no large upfront costs or storage issues.
I have a deep appreciation for books, and I understand that many people still prefer learning from printed copies. For this reason, the print option remains available to everyone involved.
