Edwalton Manor: Supporting Communication with Makaton

In August 2025, I was delighted to be invited to deliver a couple of Makaton Taster workshops to the residents and team at Edwalton Manor Care Home in Nottingham.

Edwalton Manor Care Home truly stands out. From my first step inside, I was warmly welcomed and impressed by the range of amenities available to residents. During my brief tour, I couldn’t decide which area I liked most: the hair salon, cinema, spa bathroom, bar, or the various dining rooms and lounges. All rooms are spacious and the beautifully landscaped gardens add to the charm.

The delivery of care demonstrated a clear commitment to personalised support tailored to each individual. There is also a diverse and engaging range of daily activities available.

The Makaton Taster workshop I delivered is a 2-hour workshop. Participants have the opportunity to learn a selection of 34 high frequency, functional, everyday signs, and symbols from the Makaton Core Vocabulary, plus a further 12 signs and symbols which are most relevant to their setting. This gives an introduction into The Makaton Communication Programme in an interactive way, giving participants the opportunity to find out more, to decide whether further training is appropriate.

The feedback that I received

“ We’re proud to be introducing Makaton, a language programme using signs and symbols to support speech. Makaton is already making a real difference for our residents, especially those living with dementia or communication difficulties. It enables staff to communicate more effectively with residents, making interactions clearer, more inclusive, and reassuring for everyone.

At Edwalton Manor, every voice matters — and with Makaton, we’re making sure every voice is heard.”
